The stories of my life on a little island in the middle of the Mediterranean sea ... and my occasional adventures beyond these shores.

Losing Sight Of The Shore

When you live on an island as small as this one, you learn from an early age where your boundaries end. It’s right there, at the precise point where the blue waves kiss the land. Beyond that is the unknown, the ancient sea, the infinite ocean. We can confine ourselves to these shores, or we can look beyond the horizon. It is the story of life on a small island – the constant reaching out and drawing in, like the waves, like the sea.

It’s the same with writing. Sometimes we have to search deep within ourselves. And sometimes, we have to look beyond the immediate and reach out to that intangible area where only our imagination can take us. I am going through a rather barren phase right now. I am living in a world that is strangely void of words. Sometimes I am tempted to give up. To curl up in a corner till the words land gently around me again, like the salty sea spray.

But I refuse to let myself be defeated. Some advise to continue writing; despite everything, to continue. So I am following that advice. Today, I am not writing about anything in particular, just going with the flow. I think they call it free-writing. And who knows, perhaps if I search very deep within, I will find them again, those lost words. Or maybe it’s time to lose sight of the shore.

Either way, I think it is going to be a voyage of self-discovery.

  2. I have another problem, I can't live without writing ! Ideas are coming so quickly that my hands don't follow ! I have always loved to write even as a young girl. My teacher accused me to have too much phantasy, what an idiot, lol !
Blogging is for me heaven, I can write every day and even people read me. What a nice hobby for my "old" days. You are young, you will find your way ! At that time in my life I was too busy to write something for myself which was quiet frustrating looking back.

  3. I too have full faith in you, Loree. But I understand completely. I have been feeling very much the same these past few months and have let my camera do the "talking" for me. It will come back, it always does in some form or another. And what you wrote today is so beautiful!

  4. I have no doubt about your writing ability at all. Ppfft. You are a wife. Major stories there. You are a mother...unending stories there. You are a woman...aren't we fascinating creatures. You live on a tiny island in an exotic locale and history (perhaps not to you but to all of us out here). Oh, and here's another one. You are married to a foreign husband. Curiosity abounds with how you met, how you ended up where you are, cultural differences that are funny (or not) between the two of you. Most times I think my life is dreadfully boring and who would want to read what is rumbling in my head. But, then I remind myself...my blog isn't about writing "for an audience". I just write because I can't stop doing it! I try to block out any sort of audience because with that comes...expectations (shivers).

  5. Fragile moments happen to everyone, you must just accept it and very soon you'll be back and full of ideas. Go about snapping pictures I am sure something will strike you and give you that spark to write .... don't worry too much , the words will come back, just wait and see.
    Have a nice weekend!
    Sue.

  6. creativity, like the ocean, comes in waves. when i am feeling low and uninspired, i know it's time to take a break and rest. this is a time to restock the pond, take long walks in nature, read - or re-read - books you love and listen to music. this way you give yourself a chance to reboot your spirit and in time, you will feel new ideas flowing your way.

  8. You need a break now and then, but I know for sure you can't give up writing. It's who you're and it's in you. You will soon find that craving to write again.

You said you're not writing, but this post is writing, with gorgeous photos to accompany every single word that you're saying.

  10. We all have moment's of writer's block and it feels frustrating. For me, the more I stress on it the worse it becomes. Soon, you will become inspired and the words will begin to flow again. Until then, go out and enjoy yourself, and if you see something inspirational, we're all ears.. eyes ;)
Wishing you a fabulous week! xoxo, B

  12. Hi dear Loree, it's been a while since I've dropped by your blog...and now I'm so glad I did! 'Losing sight of the Shore' you said? No, I don't think so, you are right on, spot on and pouring out your heart and soul into your writing...which I always love to read :) Or maybe you ARE losing sight of the shore so now you CAN cross the ocean.

You have so many helping you get back on track so I won't repeat but if you feel kind of lost, never fear, as Amanda said, 'give youself a chance to reboot your spirit...' and enjoy the journey!

    Hugs,
    Doreen
